The purpose of this project was to provide biologists and managers along the Atlantic coast with tools to predict the effects of accelerating sealevel rise on the distribution of piping plover breeding habitat, to test those predictions, and to feed results back into the modeling framework to improve predictive capabilities.

In the Northeast United States region, efforts are underway to better organize and integrate marine ecosystem data to support ocean planning and management efforts. An important step in this process is translating existing data to a common language so that heterogeneous data can be viewed in a common framework region-wide to better facilitate decision-making.

This data product was created for the project titled: “Application of the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) to the Northwest Atlantic” which was partially funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service and a joint collaborative project with The Nature Conservancy (Eastern Division Conservation Science), University of Rhode Island (Graduate School of Oceanography), and Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game (Division of Marine Fisheries).

The American Black Duck (Anas rubripes) is a large dabbling duck that breeds in a variety of wetland types in northeastern North America and winters in wetlands along the Atlantic coast.For the non-breeding season, it has been chosen to represent the habitat needs of other species of wildlife that also use estuarine and freshwater coastal marsh and open water.

To evaluate the potential effects of climate change on wildlife habitat and ecological integrity in the northeastern United States from 2010 to 2080, a University of Massachusetts Amherst team derived a set of climate projections at a fine spatial resolution for the entire Northeast. The projections are based upon publicly available climate models. This dataset represents projections of the total average annual precipitation (mm/year) using one of two IPCC greenhouse gas concentration scenarios (RCP4.5 or RCP8.5).

The North Atlantic Region of the United States and Canada boasts diverse habitats, from coasts to mountains, that support endemic and rare plant species. However, recent conservation actions and prioritization efforts in this region have neglected to include plants. We conducted a broad-scale conservation assessment for vascular plants that occur in the North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NALCC). The primary outcome is a prioritized list of rare, highly threatened, declining, or sensitive plant species identified for conservation action.

These datasets represent the aquatic core networks, which include lotic and lentic core areas and aquatic buffers. NOTE - The aquatic buffers dataset has been converted to integers and only contain values of 90 -100 (0.9 - 1) for online purposes, the original dataset is included in the download and contains all values. This dataset represents the North Atlantic LCC's ecoregion boundary. Landscape conservation cooperatives (LCCs) are conservation-science partnerships between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and other federal agencies, states, tribes, NGOs, universities and stakeholders within a geographically defined area. They inform resource management decisions to address national-scale stressors-including habitat fragmentation, genetic isolation, spread of invasive species, and water scarcity-all of which are accelerated by climate change.

Designed by scientists to simplify consistent data collection and management, the iPlover smartphone application gives trained resource managers an easy-to-use platform where they can collect and share data about coastal habitat utilization across a diverse community of field technicians, scientists, and managers. This dataset depicts the ecological integrity of locations (represented by 30 m grid cells) throughout the northeastern United States based on environmental conditions existing in approximately 2010 for aquatic systems.


The values for this dataset were extracted from the Index of Ecological Integrity, Region-wide, Version 3.2 for all aquatic systems. Updated 09/2017. The metadata for the original dataset is as follows:

This dataset represents the observed and predicted relative bird density during autumn migratory stopover within the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic U.S. as measured by NEXRAD weather surveillance radar during the periods of peak landbird migration (15 August to 7 November) during 2008 through 2014. The dataset also includes measures of land cover characteristics, vegetative productivity, and geographic context used in the models to predict bird stopover use.
